Tetrabutylammonium tribromide,CAS No.:38932-80-8, is also known by the following synonyms: TBABr₃; Tetra-n-butylammonium tribromide; Tetrabutylazanium tribromide; Tetrabutylammonium perbromide. It is a stable red solid, non-toxic, with a melting point of 70-72 ℃. It is difficult to dissolve in water and easily soluble in organic solvents such as chloroform, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate, acetonitrile, etc. Due to its fixed bromine content, stable performance, and ease of operation, tetrabutylammonium tribromide has been widely used as an effective bromination reagent in organic synthesis.In 1951, Buckles et al. dissolved tetrabutylammonium bromide in a carbon tetrachloride solution of bromine to prepare TBABr3. The reaction can be completed in a very short time, with a yield of 91%. It is also possible to pass bromine vapor through solid tetrabutylammonium bromide without using a solvent. Tetrabutylammonium tribromide can be used as a catalyst in the preparation of O-isopropylidene derivatives of free sugars. and as a reagent in methanol for the cleavage of tert-butyldimethylsilyl (TBDMS) ethers chemoselectively. also as a catalyst in the synthesis of bis-indolymethanes by electrophilic substitution of indoles with different aldehydes.
