Trimethylammonium chloride, abbreviated as TMBAC or TMBA, is a quaternary ammonium salt compound with CAS number 56-93-9, molecular formula C ₁₀ H ₁₆ NCl, and molecular weight 185.7. This compound is synthesized from benzyl chloride and trimethylamine and is mainly used in metal chemical analysis, emulsifiers, and polymerization inhibitors. At room temperature, it is a colorless crystal and easily deliquescent. The product often exists in the form of a 60% aqueous solution. Its water solubility reaches 800 g/L, soluble in ethanol and butanol, but insoluble in ether. At high temperatures, it decomposes into benzyl chloride and trimethylamine, and has hygroscopicity. According to the safety label, this substance is a hazardous chemical and should be avoided from inhalation or skin contact when in contact.
